Pray persistently—and the fog lifts

Discouragement melts in the light of spiritual thoughts.

The window had fogged up, because of a broken seal. From indoors, the scene was foggy, too. But I knew the day itself wasn't foggy. It was a simple matter to slide the window open and view the outdoors as it truly was.

Prayer works in the same way. Prayer cuts through the fog, so to speak, so that we can see clearly. Christ Jesus was able to see straight through any fog of evil, to the truth about man. His perception differed from those around him. He saw what God saw—perfect man, perfect creation—just as God had created it. Jesus proved the truth of this vision by healing.

If we still have some distance to go in seeing through the fog, we don't need to be discouraged. Even Jesus' disciples were not thoroughly convinced of the truth he taught until after Jesus' resurrection. Science and Health explains, "In Latin the word rendered disciple signifies student; and the word indicates that the power of healing was not a supernatural gift to those learners, but the result of their cultivated spiritual understanding of the divine Science, which their Master demonstrated by healing the sick and sinning" (p. 271). We, too, can cultivate this clear vision by being consistently active disciples of Christ.
