Discovering "shy things"

Douglas Wood has traveled by canoe through many of the lakes and rivers of the North Woods. The rocky hills, the forests, and the intricate maze of waterways that link Canada and the United States along the Minnesota and Ontario border are noted for their pristine, almost magical, beauty. I've paddled down the Basswood River myself, past the ancient pictographs on cliff faces along the shores of Crooked Lake, and portaged into a number of the smaller lakes that shine like blue sapphires on emerald palette of spruce, fir, and giant pines.

When our lives are too noisy, we might not see the most important things.
