Q This question was asked in my Sunday School class: "If God, who is divine Spirit, created everything spiritually, including man, then why do we have to go through this material existence?"

A If we accept what the five physical senses report about man, it appears that existence is fundamentally material. Yet the Bible makes clear that man is spiritual, made in the image and likeness of God, who is Spirit. Through prayer and spiritual sense, we perceive our true, spiritual nature—all the God-given grace, intelligence, power, and love that are ours as the image, the idea, of God. In this way, as if awakening from a dream, we learn the truth that man was never put into a material condition in the first place. This spiritual awakening progressively frees us from the beliefs and limitations inherent in materiality.
