Surgery averted

I was twelve when a major physical healing occurred. I had been a sickly kid, suffering from acute tonsillitis complicated with heart disease. It made me unhappy, for I missed enjoying my childhood days. I was always taking medication, and often in bed. My mother thought of me as a problem child, as expenses for doctors and medicines ruined our family budget. The condition became worse as I grew.

Finally our doctor recommended that the only recourse was to have an operation. The thought of undergoing the operation scared me more than anything else, and besides, we did not have enough money to pay for it. So in desperation, my mother sought the help of a Christian Scientist. It was a well-known fact in our community that this man whom my mother asked for help had been cured of tuberculosis without the use of medicine. We visited him. and immediately he helped me understand that I am the image and likeness of God, perfect and spiritual. He introduced me to the Christian Science Sunday School, and I liked it. Sunday School was my basic and greatest education at that time. Since then daily study of the Lesson-Sermon, found in the Christian Science Quarterly, has been my guidance.

I realized that dying was not part of reaching this spiritual heaven.

Through my search for Truth I began to see that I am not a victim of an illness, but of false belief. I need only to turn to God and see His beautiful creation; the physical problem is merely the manifestation of a deeper need to know God better. Not only was I healed, but much more—my family is being richly blessed by my study of Christian Science.

There is always an answer for those who turn absolutely to God and are willing to lay down all for Christ. The gift of joy is always available. By my understanding this, the burden of grief and sorrow was gradually healed. As Jesus promised, "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted" (Matt.5:4). Just recently my mother passed away. The mourning for her was the starting point where I found a higher hope of life in God, Spirit. I woke up to what the Revelator said in the Apocalypse: "I saw a new heaven and a new earth" (Rev. 21:1). In the Glossary of Science and Health, heaven is described as "harmony; the reign of Spirit; government by divine Principle; spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul" (p. 587). I realized that dying was not part of reaching this spiritual heaven. Giving deeper thought to all these ideas, I became peaceful and joyful, acknowledging that my mother really deserved heaven, as do we all.

I am extremely happy being a student of Christian Science.
