Although Americans' concerns about violent crime are rising, the rate of crime is actually falling—and has been for some time. Since 1993 the national homicide rate has dropped 20 percent. Over the past two years, violent juvenile crime has dropped a combined 11.9 percent.
Since 1993, however, network television news coverage of crime has increased 721 percent.
