To Our Readers

One summer when I was a boy, my brother and I and our cousin found a small boat and paddled it across the river that ran past my grandfather's house. We hadn't asked for permission, and we knew it was against the rules to be out on the river by ourselves.

Halfway across, the boat started to leak. The tide changed. We got caught in the current, and suddenly it wasn't fun anymore. We didn't think we could make it back. We were afraid.

Yes, we did finally make it back safely. And I think all three of us learned a lesson—and not only from Grandpa's stern but loving reprimand.
