The following editorial appeared on July 4, 1996, in the Rhode Island daily newspaper Providence Journal-Bulletin, and is reprinted with permission.
This year's annual meeting of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston brought 3,000 delegates from around the world to the Church's headquarters in the city's Back Bay neighborhood [in June].
Besides hearing reports from The Christian Science Board of Directors, and panel discussions by managers of church-sponsored activities, the Christian Scientists at the 101st annual church meeting named a new President for the Church, Juan Carlos Lavigne of Argentina, to preside for the next year.
