What are we watching?
Video and mental images can have quite an impact on life. Many people who study acting and those who play in different sports have found that videos of their performance help them improve. Lots of times people pick up new dances by watching MTV. Whatever our interest, a video by an expert can help us get the right model in thought. This, along with mental discipline and persistence, enables us to perform more effectively.
Spiritual growth also proceeds more readily if we choose good models or examples and approach it with discipline. This effort increases our ability to resolve problems, to overcome limitations, and to heal ourselves or others. Mary Baker Eddy, the author of Science and Health, writes: "We are all sculptors, working at various forms, moulding and chiseling thought. What is the model before mortal mind? Is it imperfection, joy, sorrow, sin, suffering? Have you accepted the mortal model? Are you reproducing it?" (p. 248)
Those are questions we should consider seriously. Do you find that if you hear that the flu is going around, you tend to come down with it? Is it worth watching news reports about sickness along with ads for medicine, if this produces a propensity to be ill?
