Christian Science has been my way of life for many years and...
Christian Science has been my way of life for many years and has blessed me in countless ways. I have had many healings, but two in particular stand out. The first took place some years ago when my husband and I were visiting one of our daughters and her family at Christmastime. It was a happy occasion, but I was suffering from a painful ailment that kept getting worse until I was almost totally incapacitated. I called a practitioner, who agreed to give me Christian Science treatment. He lovingly referred me to some passages on illusion from Science and Health. One reference that still remains special to me is: "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not" (p. 495).
At the time, I wasn't able to think clearly. Nevertheless, the faithful prayer of the practitioner and the loving support of my daughter brought improvement. In a few days I was well enough to travel home by car, a distance of about five hundred miles. Once home, I called a practitioner in my area to continue Christian Science treatment, and I was completely healed within three days—I was able to walk onto the platform of my branch church and perform the duties of Second Reader.
The second healing was more recent. Two days before a cross-country trip to visit another daughter, a hard growth on my body became enlarged and inflamed. It was at this time, too, that I began to see that I was becoming too critical of others. I saw this as a hardness in my character. I prayed with the reference in Science and Health "Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness" (p. 162). I also studied the third verse of Hymn 278 from the Christian Science Hymnal:
