When I was a sophomore in high school, I had the opportunity...

When I was a sophomore in high school, I had the opportunity to demonstrate my gratitude for both Christian Science and football. Playing high-school football had been a goal of mine since I was very young and this was to be my first year to participate in this sport at that level.

Before my first game, however, I stepped full force on a drinking glass that was on the floor and deeply lacerated my foot. When this happened, my mom and I immediately began to pray, affirming the truth of my being as an expression of God. I quickly turned my thoughts to "the scientific statement of being" by Mary Baker Eddy (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468). I had memorized it during my Sunday School classes. This statement explains that matter is not a part of God and therefore could not be a part of me. In a short time I was calm. My mother was able to bandage properly the profusely bleeding foot. I called a Christian Science practitioner for Christian Science treatment.

I had learned in Sunday School that I could confidently turn to God for any healing. Each day I noted progress even if it was only slight. Expressing from the beginning a wholehearted childlike trust in God was the most beneficial thing that I could have done.
