Who does the works?
Humility has a way of opening doors, literally and figuratively.
In the days of the Roman Empire, the return to Rome of a conquering general and his legions was an occasion for a special parade. In more recent times we have seen military heroes, astronauts, and championship athletes honored with some very elegant parades as a form of recognition for the feats they have performed.
While we may not be military heroes, astronauts, or champion athletes, we may on occasion regard something we've done well to be worthy of some kind of special recognition. In those moments we may need a reminder concerning who it is that does the works. And that reminder is that all true ability derives entirely from God, and that man is God's image, or idea, reflecting the one divine Mind.
The realization that we are in reality the spiritual ideas of God does not deprive us of anything good, including a sense of genuine worth. In fact, this understanding frees us here and now to overcome a sense of limitation. Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health: "The term Science, properly understood, refers only to the laws of God and to His government of the universe, inclusive of man. From this it follows that business men and cultured scholars have found that Christian Science enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity" (p. 128).
