To entertain angels

Many people think of angels as supernatural beings in human or animal form. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, describes them this way: "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality" (p. 581). An angel, then, is not a messenger, but a message. So when we "entertain" angels, to use an expression from the book of Hebrews (see 13:2), we are really entertaining messages from God.

Some dictionary definitions of entertain are "to receive, to take into consideration, to contemplate, to hold in mind." So in entertaining angels, we are receiving God's messages, contemplating them, considering them.

How do we recognize angel thoughts? Their nature is usually quiet and peaceful. They come naturally. Sometimes they are thoughts that say, "Do this," or "Don't do that." Sometimes they come as warnings. At other times they come as spiritual inspiration, perhaps through a Bible verse. Thinking about a particular verse or spiritual message and applying it to the situation at hand is entertaining angels. As we learn to pay attention to these thoughts, we begin to recognize that they are ideas that protect us. They guide and uplift thought if we follow their leading.
