One day my boss called me into his office and told me he could no longer afford to keep me employed full time. He suggested I begin looking for another job, but not to worry or rush.
This wasn't a surprise to me. In fact, I had occasionally looked at classified advertisements and had even sent out some résumés; my company's business had been dwindling for some time. But it was still a shock to me to face the prospect of job hunting in a bad economy.
That weekend I searched the newspapers, sent out several résumés, and began interviewing at employment agencies. I spread the word among friends and business acquaintances I thought might help me. I also gave my résumé to a friend whose business it is to counsel job hunters, asking her to critique it and to help me make it more appealing.
