Large, billowy sails. Authentic-looking cannons. The sailing ship pictured on the box was magnificent. What child with an interest in building models could resist such a project! The young man's father was very supportive, but wisely pointed out that there was a great deal of careful work involved in properly constructing the model. It could be accomplished, and it would be marvelous, but it wouldn't just snap together neatly in a few minutes. Certain steps had to be taken.
Ah, the voice of an experienced model builder; someone who has learned that there's a cost in completing something worthwhile, whether we're considering building a model ship or a model life.
Perhaps to Christ Jesus' disciples, following in the footsteps of the Master appeared at first to be something they could do easily enough. But Jesus pointed out to them the responsibility that came with sticking close to his example. "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me" (Luke 9:23).
