Healing's spiritual side essential

This week's column looks at a June 15 report by Bangor Daily News writer Andrew Kekacs on a speech delivered by former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in Maine. Dr. Koop's observations on the "element of sacredness to spirituality," and the response from a local Christian Scientist, show the kind of thought being given today to "the spiritual dimension of healing."

Shunned by many doctors since the advent of effective, science-based therapies in this century, the spiritual dimension of healing must not be ignored, according to a former surgeon general of the United States.

Appearing with his trademark beard and bow tie, Dr. C. Everett Koop spoke to several hundred health care workers ... at the Augusta Civic Center.
