Notes from an L. A. classroom

When a teacher's expectancy of good from her students is fired by spiritual conviction, it always has an effect.

There's a very special place in my heart for all my students, regardless of their lives outside of school. I expect them to do well. I love my students, each one of them, and I know they feel my love for them.

Most of my students have probably never heard of Christian Science, and since I teach in a public school, I wouldn't offer it to them there. However, there's a lot I can offer them, especially by example, helping to bring out in them a sense of calm, order, and trustworthiness—qualities these students really yearn to make their own!

When I started studying Christian Science and learned of my spiritual identity as God's likeness, I realized I had talents and abilities that I had never known were mine. These wonderful abilities were given to me by God, and because God, or Love, is impartial, I saw He had also freely given spiritual gifts to all of us. We're all God's children. I saw that my job is to look for and find the Godlike qualities in others. When I consistently affirm that everyone has God-given qualities, I find I see these expressed around me by students and colleagues.
