In the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, is found a description of angels as "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect ..." (p. 581). My mother told me that when I was very young, I took liberty with the above definition and said that angels were "God's thoughts passing to me."

These angels, or messages, that come to all of us at different times have often been a source for healing in our family over the years. One such healing took place when our son was in junior high school. On a summer day, while working at a large garden nursery, he fell through the roof of a greenhouse and badly wounded his arm. The owners of the establishment rushed him to a nearby hospital. By the time my husband and I arrived, doctors were cleansing the wound and ready to take a number of stitches in the arm.

Two angel thoughts were readily available for us. One was a statement which a Christian Science practitioner I called had quoted from Science and Health: "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind" (p. 124). She assured us that our son had never been and would never be separated or fallen from God's love. The second angel came from our son, when he calmly told us that stitches were not necessary because he wanted to depend wholly on Christian Science for the healing of his arm. His confidence and expectancy of healing completely quieted our fear and feelings of false responsibility.
