It was the holiday season, and of course my husband and I anticipated it joyfully. We had no plans until shortly after Christmas, when we would join our family, who lived a day's journey away, and we continued remodeling projects on our near century-old home.
One evening I went upstairs to turn on candle lights in several windows. When I came downstairs, excited about the new lights which would add a glow to our home, I opened the door at the bottom of the stairs. In my joy I had totally forgotten there was no floor there, and I found myself suspended amid the new floor joists. My legs were dangling free, but my upper body was lodged between the joists.
I was barely able to breathe or utter a sound, and was in much pain. I did not feel capable of moving or lifting myself at all. However, the silence following the crash brought my husband quickly to the scene, and he was successful in getting me out of the hole.
