"[Evelina] de Bruin, [a South African] who has raised 10 children, [had been imprisoned] with her husband, Gideon Madlongwane, sentenced to be hanged for a slaying in which they insist they took no part.

"'No, I never ever lost faith,' Miss de Bruin said in Xhosa as she sat with her husband in their small living room. 'I knew deep down that one day, maybe not tomorrow but one day, I would be set free, because I knew I was not guilty.'
