Of all of the wonderful things my family has given me, the greatest gift is Christian Science.
When I was two and a half years old, I managed to place my barrette into an electrical socket. My mother was alerted to the trouble by the flickering lights and also by my cries.
Upon reaching me, she scooped me into her arms and extinguished the fire on my pajamas with her hands. At first, the evidence of injury was distressing. My mother and grandmother wrapped my wounds. A Christian Science practitioner was called to give me treatment through prayer. My father was called home from work. My mother and grandmother shared hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal with me. One I remember was "Mother's Evening Prayer," with words by Mary Baker Eddy. By that evening all pain was gone, and as my mother walked me down the hall, I said, "God with me, Mama." Within three days I was completely well.
