Perpetual middle age—or spiritual renewal?
Christian Science helps us gain a whole new perspective on age and aging and shows how our lives can be perpetually renewed.
Recently an article in our local newspaper caught my eye. "Study finds middle age is spreading" read the headline. The article explained that because people are living longer, the term middle age is being redefined. The article cited a national survey in which 47 percent of those interviewed between the ages of sixty-six and seventy-five considered themselves to be middle aged.
After an initial smile at the double meaning of the headline, I thought about the wit who remarked that some film actors had found the secret of perpetual middle age! The article made me think of the profound changes that had taken place in my thinking concerning age since I began studying Christian Science.
This beautiful and practical religion doesn't offer a plan whereby we can remain forever young or prolong the middle years. What it can and does do is offer its followers the very Science of Life that Christ Jesus practiced. As we understand and practice this Science in our lives, we overcome the penalties associated with age and progressively prove that man truly is spiritual here and now.
