An item of interest
Since 1903, The Herald of Christian Science has been published by The Christian Science Publishing Society as a sister publication to The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. The Herald was founded by Mary Baker Eddy and was first published in German. Over the years a number of editions of the Herald in other languages have been added.
Until 1918 the Herald contained no English text. William P. McKenzie, a student of Mrs. Eddy's and later an Editor of the Christian Science periodicals, was interviewed in 1922. Mr. McKenzie was asked how the decision had been made to introduce English-language material into the Herald.
"At that time," he said, "we were practically compelled to use English on the opposite page because the [United States] government would not allow us to send [the Herald] unless the translation accompanied it." In 1918, the First World War was still going on in Europe, and the United States had become involved.
