Upon waking one morning I found it almost impossible to get up because of sudden severe back pain. Endeavoring to stand or walk caused me twice almost to faint. This frightening experience made me turn to God in prayer for help, acknowledging that in reality I was God's perfect spiritual idea and denying the possibility that God's child could ever be conscious of pain or be unable to think clearly. Earnest prayer brought some peace and stability.

The next two days a Christian Science practitioner gave me treatment through prayer and I made every effort to obey this gentle command from Psalms: "Be still, and know that I am God." During this time, as seldom before, I felt spiritually hungry and couldn't quite get enough of communing with God. The Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings were my constant companions. Nothing else had any attraction for me—radio, books, television, or newspapers—and I really felt the cohesive nature of the one Mind, God. I gained a better understanding of this statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy: "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind."

This drawing closer to God revealed that I had been accepting as my sole and personal responsibility certain duties and business decisions without acknowledging God's help. This had left me feeling quite burdened.
