About our cover THINKING IT THROUGH
A good anchor
If all the world were a sea and all the people in it sailors on a voyage of exploration, present changes in the world would well test our navigational skills and our faith.
Read, then, the Bible from the intrepid explorer's point of view. The days of newborn Christianity were not placid pleasure cruises. Christ Jesus and his followers were spiritual navigators opening up a new world. There were more than a few "storms" at sea. Christianity was challenging and then transforming the very assumptions upon which life had been based.
There are gospel narratives that take one's breath away as we grasp what was actually happening. Yet the spiritual experience at its core in the life of the Master was not upheaving, anxious, fear-inducing, or panicked. Perhaps nothing represents this Christly calm and anchoring power more vividly than an episode in which the disciples were together with Jesus in the middle of a fierce storm.
