Expectations
A new year is a time of expectancy; we look forward to new opportunities to use our talents more fully, and we renew our resolve to bring unfinished enterprises to fruition. But sometimes we also look backward and feel that our highest expectations for ourselves and our families have not always been fulfilled. How can we be certain that the good we hope for will actually come about?
Prospects that are subject to the whim of market forces or fluctuation of human opinion are vulnerable to chance, but expectations that are based securely on spiritual values can be realized.
The Psalmist knew where to turn to find true fulfillment and enduring stability. He sang, "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. ... In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God." By centering all our expectation on God, we begin to experience the good that is undeviating because it has a spiritual source.
