Helping children through a crisis

A childlike understanding of God's care can do wonders for children—and adults!

How long is fifteen seconds? Not long enough when you're visiting a friend or gazing at a beautiful sunset. But an eternity (or so it may seem) when the floor beneath you begins to rock violently.

So I discovered recently when I found myself in the midst of an earthquake with three small grandchildren, one a babe in arms, and two adult helpers—the children's nanny and her sister. We had just said goodbye to my daughter and son-in-law as they drove off to a World Series baseball game.

In that prolonged moment of the quake, there was time for the two women, one holding the baby, to drop to their knees and pray aloud as they had been taught in their church. Five-year-old Jessica and her three-year-old brother, Spencer, stood motionless in wonder.
