A HEART FOR COMMUNITY

It's natural to care deeply about community. Real love for family extends to neighbors—and overflows for the whole of society. This occasional column tells of how a spiritual perspective has been helping Sentinel readers help others and make a contribution to healing some of the collective challenges facing communities today.

About three years ago I wanted to improve my Spanish and also help children, since I had been in the education field at one time. So I volunteered to be a tutor in a nearby elementary school and asked to work with bilingual children who were having trouble with reading, English, and spelling.....

One day just before school ended, the oldest Mexican boy told me he and his sister wanted to talk with me. His sister asked if I went to church, to which I replied in the affirmative. She then asked if she could go to church with me. I hesitated, because I did not want to mix school and religion. Then I told her that if her parents agreed, it would be all right with me....
