Last year I received a telephone call from the nurse at our daughter's school. Our daughter had been playing rounders when the ball hit her in the eye with some force. The nurse told me on the phone that the eye would swell up and that there would be considerable bruising. I felt a calm certainty that as our daughter is in reality God's perfect child, no harm can touch her. I felt sure she would be able to participate in the school concert that evening. She was scheduled to play in the orchestra and jazz band and to sing in the choir.

We learn in Christian Science that "metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy). Just before I went to pick up our daughter, I read this sentence from Science and Health: "Divine Science deals its chief blow at the supposed material foundations of life and intelligence." This was very helpful.

Neither of the nurse's predictions came true. There was no swelling or discoloration. Our daughter played her flute and saxophone and sang in the choir that evening with no discomfort of difficulty. The following morning there was some soreness, but we talked about her God-given dominion and prayed further to realize this spiritual truth. The pain vanished, and she went to school as normal. That was the end of the trouble.
