Walking loose in the midst

Do we ask in our prayer that God spare us
The lions, the vipers, the treks through the desert,
The fiery furnaces?

But . . . what proves most to mankind
(for generations beyond our own)
The powerlessness of evil,
The spirituality and perfection of man, and
The harmlessness of real being?

To have no trials?

Or, when accused and tried without cause,
And cast bound into a fiery furnace,
To be seen by all

Walking loose in the midst of it?
