One day in the spring of 1989, while on a bicycle ride with a friend, I became aware of a nagging pain in the side of my neck. When I inadvertently rubbed my neck, I felt a large lump. Within seconds I found myself wondering if this was serious, or even deadly, and became frightened. But as I turned my thought to God's allness, I was able to finish the ride calmly.
When I arrived home, I told my wife about the situation. We agreed to begin Christian Science treatment through prayer to heal the lump and the fear of death. For the next three weeks we prayed as taught in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It was a rich experience. Every morning we would talk about some new spiritual insight we had gained. My wife was a constant source of encouragement.
During this period, I realized a need to progress higher in my understanding of God and His idea of man as the expression of eternal Life. While praying privately, I would suddenly think of a passage from the Bible or from Mrs. Eddy's writings and turn to it. Each time there would be new understanding, an uplifting sense of God's loving care, that would reassure me that I was on the path to health. I felt that the heavenly Father was nurturing and guiding my thoughts from moment to moment.
