My introduction to Christian Science came through a dear...
My introduction to Christian Science came through a dear friend who invited me to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I tried diligently to comprehend the readings that were read from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Then, when the testimonies began, my heart really caught on fire. I had been raised in another denomination and had grown tired of ritualism. I had often thought of finding a church where one could just stand up and publicly give praise to God. Now, here I was, listening to moving accounts from ordinary people of how much God meant to them in their everyday lives.
After the service was over, a church member kindly gave me a copy of the Christian Science textbook (the aforementioned book), and when I got home, I could not put it down. I was so hungry for the truth that, as it says in Revelation, I just "ate it up." The next day my friend invited me over to her house, and we just sat and talked about Christian Science most of the day.
I really loved what I was hearing, but I didn't want to give up alcohol or drugs, and I figured if I was to be a good Christian, I couldn't drink or take drugs. When I mentioned this to my friend, the only thing she said was, "Don't worry about that; just keep reading the book." I thought to myself, I can have my cake and eat it too! I can be a good Christian and still have my material pleasures. So I continued reading, and one day I was invited to a party. As it came time to pass around the drinks and the drugs, I found myself saying, "No, thank you." I had no desire for them whatsoever.
