My introduction to Christian Science came nearly sixty-five...
My introduction to Christian Science came nearly sixty-five years ago when I started reading Christian Science lectures printed in a Winnipeg daily newspaper. Each time I read one of these lectures I felt very uplifted; but, with four boys to raise, I felt too busy to buy the Christian Science textbook—Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy—and learn more about this Science.
In 1933, now with six boys, we moved to Victoria. Some six months after our move, a neighbor came to see me and asked if I would like to accompany her to a Christian Science lecture. This dear neighbor, knowing that my husband was unemployed and in poor health, felt that I could receive some help from the lecture. She was not a Christian Scientist herself but faithfully attended the lectures because she felt benefited by them. I agreed to go with her.
It was the turning point in my life. As the lecture came to a close, I knew that I had found that for which I had been searching—a loving God, who does not inflict harm on His children. My husband, who had been out when I left, asked me when I returned home where I had been. When I told him, he said, "Are you crazy?" I replied, "No, I feel I have a better sense of what Christian Science is all about." I had brought home a Sentinel from the lecture, and I read aloud some of the passages to my husband. He became as convinced as I was that this was true.
