Several years ago, after attending a Thanksgiving service in our branch church, I drove to a son's house, expecting to ride with his family to another son's for dinner. While walking up to the house, I slipped on the icy sidewalk, injuring my hip and thigh, I was unable to rise, but when some children came by, pulling sleds, I called to them and they summoned my family. Many spiritual truths from the service that day, as well as the testimonies of healing that had been given, supported me.
I am the only Christian Scientist in the family, and my children were very concerned. But they most lovingly respected my wish to rely on Christian Science for healing. One of my sons was able to reach a Christian Science practitioner, who said she would pray for me. I have learned that a practitioner must be very devoted to recognizing that God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient; that He is All and is wholly good. This spiritual understanding brings healing.
The practitioner also called and made arrangements for nursing care for me in a nearby facility for Christian Scientists. During this time I was sure of God's nearness to us, and my joy in being able to turn to Him in all things was very full. This joy remained with me the entire time. I prayed continuously for guidance, and I learned much. Of course, I had my books, the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The daily study of Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly), hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal, and Christ Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (see Matthew) all aided the healing taking place in my consciousness. You see, I was rediscovering my spiritual relationship to God. All of these increased my appreciation of Mrs. Eddy's dedication in presenting the teachings of Christian Science to the world.
