I First became interested in Christian Science when I worked...

I First became interested in Christian Science when I worked as a cashier in a bank in the West End of London. Many of our customers were members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, London, and I found them to be most happy, friendly, and healthy. I purchased a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and became very interested in Christian Science. I began to have many healings through what I was learning in Science.

When the Second World War came, I was captured in France by the Germans in 1940 and sent to Poland. I decided in 1941 to escape and try to get to Danzing for a ship to neutral Sweden. I was not successful and was sent back to the fort from where I started. The German commandant asked me to promise not to try to escape again. This I refused to do and was immediately sentenced to "solitary confinement for the duration of the war." He also ordered that I should not be allowed any books or literature with me in my cell.

I had a small edition of Science and Health, and when the guard found this he noticed the Cross and Crown emblem on the cover of the book. This guard wore a small crucifix about his neck, under his tunic. Neither of us said anything. He gave me back my shirt with Science and Health wrapped in it. I could read only at midday for about thirty minutes because of the dark, blacked-out windows.
