It's OK to pray for democracy

The crushing of a papier-mâché "Statue of Liberty" and the brutal repression of the beginnings of liberty in China can't help making us more sharply appreciative of the real thing—the real statue, the genuine freedom it represents.

We begin to remember what we really do know about democracy—that it isn't just another competing political system; it is the people's way. As human systems of government go, it is closest to the heart and spirit of mankind. Wherever found in its pure form, it tends to liberate and energize. Democracy answers directly to the true spirit of man.

Not only is praying in support of democracy the right thing to do, it is vitally important. No, it would not be mixing religion and politics. It would not be crossing lines of church and state. Instead we are throwing our whole weight into the balance for the rights and liberties of mankind. And we believe Sentinel readers uniquely desire to do that.
