Some years ago a lump appeared on my face that was quite obvious
Some years ago a lump appeared on my face that was quite obvious. I knew that Christian Science does heal, for I had had many healings, such as those of what appeared to be a broken arm, flu, abscessed teeth, and a back injury. So, over a period of time I sought to be healed of this blemish, working with spiritual truths I had learned in Christian Science.
As a result of this prayer and study I came to see that I also needed to heal an estrangement that had occurred with a close friend. I realized that I had had too much pride to take the first step. However, I knew it was part of spiritual growth and progress to "mortify the deeds of the body" (Rom. 8:13), which to me meant repenting of and overcoming self-righteousness and a desire to correct others (instead of letting God do the correcting). Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes on pages 203-204 of Miscellaneous Writings of the baptism of repentance as "a state of mind which rends the veil that hides mental deformity." She continues: "Tears flood the eyes, agony struggles, pride rebels, and a mortal seems a monster, a dark, impenetrable cloud of error; and falling on the bended knee of prayer, humble before God, he cries, ‘Save, or I perish.' Thus Truth, searching the heart, neutralizes and destroys error."
Subduing human will and egotism, I tried to be obedient to God's will and to trust in His goodness. I went to the telephone and called my friend. We had a brief, friendly conversation. A few minutes later the lump started to drain, and within a few days my face was normal and has remained so.
