"If God's willing and the creeks don't rise"
There is a certain grace in the way a relative uses that phrase. It's positive, not doubtful. She sees God's willingness as a constant in her life.
A friend felt grace in another way when he experienced a tragedy in his life. He said he had been on the verge of giving up completely, but he couldn't for some reason. Although his prayers seemed feeble and almost overwhelmed with doubt and fear, still he made it through the crisis.
There come times in our lives when, whatever the explanation we might give ourselves, explanation doesn't simply wipe away the hurt or confusion that we feel. Nevertheless, something that may at the moment be inexplicable carries us through. This sometimes inexplicable thing is grace.
