The understanding of God and of His love for man, as taught...

The understanding of God and of His love for man, as taught in Christian Science, has been a wonderful blessing in my life since childhood. I am grateful to God for His abundant goodness.

One day some years ago I was riding horseback on bridle paths that ran alongside the major streets of a city. All of a sudden the horse bolted and ran away with me, totally disregarding my attempts to maintain control. As we approached a busy intersection, I observed that we would be crossing against a red light directly in the path of traffic.

During the week before, I had spent a great deal of time studying Mrs. Eddy's writings. With my thought focused on God as a result of this study, I felt no fear. The horse made an abrupt turn, and a line from a poem by Mrs. Eddy entitled "The Mother's Evening Prayer" came clearly to me (Poems, p. 4): "Love is our refuge; only with mine eye / Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall." The next thing I knew I was sitting on the ground, having been thrown from the horse's back. All of the cars heading toward me had stopped. (I found out later that the horse had returned safely to his stable—minus his rider, me!)
