The most wonderful thing happened to me when I was a young teen-ager. I was confined to bed with a recurring physical difficulty when a friend brought a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy for my mother to give to me. I opened the book to page 1 and read, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Immediately I knew that this book was for me! I continued to read. Soon I was up and about, and I started attending a Christian Science Sunday School, which I loved.

My childhood had been filled with braces, crutches, wheelchairs, and so forth, yet I so greatly wanted to be an actress/singer and to go to New York to pursue a career. My parents were willing to help me in every way they could, but well-meaning friends, relatives, and neighbors expressed the opinion that for me a career would be impossible. However, I read this verse in Proverbs (3:5): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." That's exactly what I did—trust in God. Through Christian Science I experienced healing of my physical difficulties. And off to New York I went.

This was just before Second World War. Radio was in its heyday, and there was much talk about the new media of television. I got radio acting and singing jobs. One of the networks was experimenting with television. It was producing test programs to show various people, especially heads of big business, to interest them in future sponsorship. I was chosen to do these programs.
