Without knowing it, I was looking for the Church of Christ, Scientist

What kind of church is required to further the goal of developing spirituality?

The house I lived in for the first twelve years of my life was literally next door to a Christian Science church, but I never went inside. My parents attended no church. At one point I was sent to a Protestant Sunday School for a couple of months. But that was it.

When I was sixteen, my parents divorced, and each entered almost immediately into a new marriage. I was devastated. My security seemed to vanish. Little more than a year after marrying my mother, my stepfather suffered a complete financial reversal.

I started to look for God and for a church that would help me truly know Him. Books provided fleeting uplift. Church services of various denominations were briefly inspiring. Most of all, the required Bible study at the private school I had been attending seemed relevant. At college I studied the major world religions, but I still could not find a church that presented a clear view of God or that gave me a straightforward, honest assessment of the marvelous character and achievements of Christ Jesus.
