The Ring of Truth

I have written of the mental and spiritual toughness which coexisted in Jesus with extraordinary sympathy and compassion.... [In my translating work with the Gospels] when I came to the "miracles" of the Gospels I did not find in them anything incompatible with his character or his declared mission. They did not give me the impression of being celestial conjuring tricks designed to produce faith.... It seems that Jesus was in many cases able to get to the storm center of the disturbance and resolve it with authoritative love.
