Our point of departure

Winter is the time of year when glossy brochures telling of exotic places take on a special attraction. Yet, while we may dream of visiting faraway lands, usually we settle for something much simpler. Nevertheless, whatever journey we decide on, even if it is only a short trip to a lakeshore or the next town, there has to be a definite point of departure if we are to get to our desired destination.

Christ Jesus invited mankind to take another kind of journey with him—a spiritual journey. He showed us a way of life that departs from the restrictions and limitations that would hold people in the framework of mortal birth and death. His way leads us to discover the freedom that comes from an understanding that God is our Father and the source of all true being.

Outlining this holy path, he said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6. Here he was referring to the eternal Christ, Truth, revealing everyone's sonship with God. The Christian today, through the Saviour's example, has the possibility of overcoming, step by step, the restrictions of mortal existence. Those who have striven to follow the way Jesus was outlining for them have found the practicality of his teachings in their lives. These teachings led his disciples then, and are even leading present-day followers, to recognize and accept the truth that the man of God's creating is wholly spiritual and always with Him.
