Why honesty is important
When Mary Baker Eddy was a little girl, she lived in farm country with her mother and dad, her grandmother, two sisters, and three big brothers. Their house was on a hill where they could look down on a road and a river beyond it.
Mary sometimes walked home from school along the road, but she also liked to take a little path through a neighbor's woods. One day she saw a pine knot lying near the path.
She knew that pine knots could make a lovely blaze in the open fireplace at home. So she picked it up and took it to her mother. But her mother wasn't pleased at all and asked her where she got it. "In Mr. Gault's woods," Mary answered. "Did you ask him for it?" When Mary said "No," her mother said she was to return the pine knot right away. "It is stealing for you to do that, and God forbids you to steal."
