God's healing power was first evident to my family more than...
God's healing power was first evident to my family more than seventy years ago. I have been told that Mother had been sent home from the hospital with the expectation that she would soon die. Her premature baby boy, delivered in the hospital, also was expected to expire. Mother had double pneumonia, and the tiny infant was given medication steadily.
A kindly neighbor, who had been healed in Christian Science, took a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to my mother, offering the assurance that it could heal. Mother's first reading of the book did not have any noticeable effect, but when she read the book again, she was able to understand and use some of the spiritual truths she was reading.
Mother desired to rely wholly on God for healing. From that time on, mother and baby made great strides forward. Mother became an active branch church member and was later able to help others through prayer in Christian Science. My little brother grew to manhood and has several children and grandchildren. As we read in Science and Health (p. 266), "... 'man's extremity is God's opportunity.'"
At age five I was introduced to the Christian Science Sunday School. Before that I had attended the Sunday School in the Protestant church of my parents and grandparents. I was given a choice, and after one Sunday I chose to be enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School because I could understand what the teacher said. The love expressed there touched a responsive chord in me.
After her healing, Mother soon applied for membership in the local Christian Science Society. When she asked for a letter of dismissal from her former church, the minister's wife and a friend came to call to try to convince Mother she was making a serious mistake. Years later when I joined a branch church in a nearby town where I was then living, I was surprised to learn that the friend and her son had become active members of that branch church.
Later my father was given up by several doctors who could not help him with lung and respiratory troubles. As a last resort he agreed to have help through prayer from a Christian Science practitioner and was healed. He became a student of Christian Science and was an active church member for over thirty years.
Our family has been blessed through the study and practice of this Science. Physical, financial, and relationship difficulties have been solved. We were amply cared for during the economic depression of the 1930s and were able to share with others God's bountiful supply.
Recurring bouts of tonsillitis and attacks of appendicitis have been permanently healed with the prayerful help of a practitioner.
Serving God through active church membership, class instruction in this Science, and the healing practice of Christian Science are blessings that have come to me through Mrs. Eddy's gift to the world. I am truly grateful.
