In the late 1950s I was diagnosed as having rheumatic fever and was hospitalized for weeks. When it was determined that I was suffering from complications affecting the heart, full bed rest at home was strictly enforced. I spent four months in this state and grew impatient with the confinement and feeling of helplessness. My precious baby girl was not allowed to be on my bed, and this especially saddened me.

A longtime school friend, who learned of my plight, began visiting me. She brought me current issues of the Sentinel, because I had expressed an interest in Christian Science before the illness. Relatives were monitoring my case, and they discouraged my interest in turning to Science for healing. Comments made by the doctors prompted them to advise me that negligence in following the prescribed treatment could eventually leave me a permanent semi invalid. My own fears and false education kept me from pursuing Christian Science, but only for a while. I continued to pray diligently in the best way I knew how.

Unexpectedly my husband was given a mandatory transfer, and he moved us all to another city. There I felt free to make a choice. Would it be material medicine or Christian Science? I knew my prayers had been answered and I chose Christian Science. Through constant study of the Bible, together with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and Miscellaneous Writings by Mary Baker Eddy, I began to progress. I discarded all my medicines, quite a large boxful. Changes were taking place in my thinking.
