We read in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 411), "Disease is always induced by a false sense mentally entertained, not destroyed." For years I harbored the fear of a highly publicized disease, pushing it away whenever I heard the disease mentioned or described on television, radio, or in conversation, but never challenging this fear through prayer.

Late in the fall of 1985 I discovered lumps forming under one side of my jaw. I prayed for myself the best I knew. My fear of the condition was considerable. At one point my husband, a lifelong, dedicated Christian Scientist, expressed concern and asked if I was having help from a Christian Science practitioner. After that I did have the help of a practitioner from time to time, and I made joyous progress in my understanding of the healing truths taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.

I dedicated as much time as possible to the study of Christian Science. Every morning I read the Bible Lesson outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly carefully, and I spent my breaks and noon hours reading selections from the Bible and from Science and Health. I tried to keep my thoughts filled with God's love. There was much progress spiritually but little was evident physically. Still, I refused to yield to discouragement.
