One evening our young son could not sleep because the soles of his feet were swollen and very painful. I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. In talking about Christ Jesus, the practitioner quoted from Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 103–104), "Even while his personality was on earth and in anguish, his individual being, the Christ, was at rest in the eternal harmony." I knew that Jesus lived his human life for all mankind's benefit and that his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension proved for us all that we are not material but spiritual. I saw that man's being is spiritual, at rest in the eternal harmony of God Himself, and that nothing could change this fact for one moment. The child went to sleep and was quickly and completely healed.
Another time the car door slammed on our son's hand. Immediately I thought of this passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 423): "Bones have only the substance of thought which forms them." This thought filled me with peace and crowded out all fear that I had to "make" the child well. I knew immediately our son's true, spiritual selfhood was untouched by the belief that he was outside of God's constant care and subject to injury. Our son was uninjured, and any pain from the incident was quickly over. I cannot tell how joyful I felt to see the immediate effects of understanding man's true, God-derived nature.
One morning I asked my husband to help take a tight lid off a canning jar. As I held the glass and he tried to turn the lid, the jar broke, cutting us both. Immediately I thought of "the scientific statement of being" from page 468 of Science and Health. We both had deep cuts on our hands and there was a lot of bleeding. Because the injuries seemed very serious I phoned a practitioner. As the practitioner declared the truth about God and man in His image, the bleeding just stopped. One of our sons had a first-aid kit from the Boy Scouts, and he bandaged our hands. Then the children left for school without having to hurry. (I was more impressed with that fact than with the healing.) My husband then went ahead with his plans to work on a rather large carpentry project as if nothing had happened, and I, too, was fine. Although we both wore bandages for several days we were not bothered by the cuts, and our hands were soon completely healed.
