Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy quotes the saying "Man's extremity is God's opportunity" (p. 266). My extremity came in 1943 when, after spending four years of active service as an officer in the British Merchant Navy, I suffered great mental distress. As far as I knew, I was in no physical danger, since my ship was in port in Alexandria, Egypt, but one night as I lay in my bunk, I was seized by uncontrollable terror.

My copy of Science and Health was beside me. I reached for it and read for hours, starting with the chapter entitled "Christian Science Practice," which begins on page 362. The Bible verse quoted by Mrs. Eddy at the beginning of this chapter was of considerable encouragement to me. The verse from Psalms reads (42:11): "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."

Gradually, as I continued to read, the mental turmoil began to recede. At the end of four hours I was able to express gratitude for my deliverance from the mesmeric suggestion of a power opposed to God. I slept peacefully for the rest of the night.
