When I was in my teens, I prayed to find the religion that was closest to what Christ Jesus taught. At that time Christian Science was the farthest thing from my thought. My father was a doctor, but the time came when medicine no longer seemed to help me. I was suffering from deep depression, and thoughts of committing suicide were uppermost in my mind.

At this point my boss, a very kind woman, asked me if I was having a difficulty. When I told her that I was, she handed me a little pamphlet on Christian Science. I no longer remember the name of the pamphlet, but I read it going home on the bus. It was like the proverbial light shining in darkness.

I began going to a Christian Science Reading Room with my boss during our lunch hours. I purchased a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, though at first the only chapter I could comprehend was the first chapter, "Prayer." I also would read the Christian Science Hymnal, and a great feeling of peace would come over me. In fact, I felt much more peaceful at the Reading Room than I had felt for a long time.
