I had grown accustomed to experiencing a measure of prosperity...

I had grown accustomed to experiencing a measure of prosperity and control over situations in my life. I understood this to be a result of lifelong trust in God, which I had learned in Christian Science. But at one point prosperity and control seemed to be things of the past as far as our farming occupation was concerned. My wife and I were having severe financial difficulties.

It was going to take more than fine-tuning or clever planning to work out of the corner we seemed to be in. There was too little profit from our farming operation to meet the large financial responsibilities we had incurred over the years. Added to this was the impact that adverse weather conditions can have on the ability to raise a good crop and harvest it in a timely manner. We were finding it impossible to meet our financial obligations. Our situation seemed quite hopeless, and my wife and I prayed to know the right thing to do.

About this time, in the fall of the year, our branch church sponsored a Christian Science lecture. After the lecture my wife and I visited with the lecturer briefly. During our conversation the opportunity arose to discuss our farming situation. The lecturer spoke of the need to refute prayerfully the false belief of the Adam curse —that man is a mortal and doomed to toil fruitlessly.
